You should learn to increase your click through rate – now

Tags : Web Design

Recently I read a fantastic article on exploring the power that language has on click through rates.

In fact, the wording I have used for the title of this piece has probably increased its CTR and read rate by nearly 5% - simply because I told you to read it, now.

Essentially the original article was about a web designer and how he worded his text relating to gaining followers on Twitter.

He found some interesting results:

  • I’m on Twitter – 4.70%
  • Follow me on Twitter – 7.31%
  • You should follow me on Twitter – 10.09%
  • You should follow me on Twitter here – 12.81%

As you can see, by trying more direct phrasing – he was able to dramatically increase his click through rate while still keeping his language polite and user friendly.

Many websites don’t actually make the effort to tell the user what they want them to do. If you want them to sign up for your newsletter, tell them and show them how. If you want them to submit details for a quote, repeat the above.

American websites have been doing this for years, with simplified process driven websites geared for conversion – while Australia still feels the need to provide information first and requests/calls to action second.

If your website isn't giving you what you want, you should change this now.
