Tune in and switch on

Ive read a few articles recently about people deciding to cut back on the amount of time they are spending in the their lives with ‘technology’. They have thus decided to spend the next year or so cutting back on their internet usage times, text messaging numbers and (god forbid) less TV. These people claim that it will simplify their lives and make it more fulfilled, giving them a real sense of humanity and depth. Turn off that TV and run to your garden and smell the flowers! Switch off your mobile phone and let people contact you with the landline or better yet they can come around for a visit!

Although i do understand the point to all this, i still say NO. Yes we do live in a fast paced society where tasks and chores are done NOW and reminders are thrown at us and we feel pressured into moving ahead without much thought as to why. But why not! What are we waiting for? We can still appreciate the garden when we have the time, but I don’t think we have to resort to what i would consider shirking our responsibility as progressive humans.

Technology is a beautiful thing! The more the merrier, the smaller the better, the faster the more efficient and time saving. I have alot to do before I die, there are so many opportunities out there, so many experiences i wish to expose myself to, and if I go around simplifying my life so i can appreciate the beauty of it all I’ll end up dying with only having achieved a handful of my desires.

However, the technology we are currently living with today enables me to move alot quicker, communicate with others, achieve goals and appreciate what a fucking incredible world we live it! If I went and lived in a tent in my garden, could i chat to a student in Nepal or share videos with a mechanic in Texas? Could I play scrabble with a farmer in Zimbabwe whilst watching the same news reports as them? NO. I couldn’t.
