How often should you blog? (0)Add to My Brief

| 31/03/2008

Good blogs update their content at least once a day, and great blogs even more often - or so it might seem. But the truth is that it is quality more than quantity that builds and keeps a blog audience.

Gone are the days when people had to hit each of their favourite sites periodically looking for new material. Most individuals now subscribe to RSS Feeds that alert them when one of the blogs they follow has fresh content.

Make no mistake; original substance is very important in maintaining a successful blog. It brings in new readers and drives them to subscribe via RSS.

The exact frequency is best set by the personality of the blog. Having a set minimum of two or three posts a week can be a good publishing strategy. Some industries, like those that follow the news or the stock market, lend themselves to several small posts a day. For other niches, this would be considered overkill. In fact, when readers feel overwhelmed or distracted by too many posts they tend to drop their feeds of that blog.

The most important aspect of posting is not how often it happens, but that each one provides value to its readers. Like a newspaper wouldn’t fill its pages with the same headline story paraphrased over and over again, each update should have information and news that is unique from previous ones. This is the key not only to casting the widest possible net in attracting readers, but building their loyalty to your site.
