Million-Dollar Michael Jackson Domain NamesAdd to My Brief

Bess Batterham | 10/07/2009

In the wake of Michael Jackson’s death many hopeful millionaires have been  snatching up any MJ-related domain names in the hope of cashing in on the domains potential value. It has been reported that GoDaddy.com have had 11,000 MJ-related domain names registered in the week following the Pop Icons death and On Ebay there are over a dozen sellers listing various MJ domain names at the optimistic price of over $12 Million.

So what is the most expensive domain name ever sold? I don’t think that anyone would be surprised that Sex.com which sold in 2006 for a reported $11 to $14 million holds the record. So it is extremely unlikely that any of these MJ domain names sell for more than a few thousand dollars. If they where to it would put them into second place just above fund.com, which sold for just under $10 million in 2008.

The thought of becoming an overnight millionaire for merely having ownership of the right domain name sounds like an easy way to slip into retirement however the likelihood of this is dismal. All the good domain names were snatched up long ago. According to one website 97% of the words in Webster’s dictionary have already been registered as .com domain names. However now that you can use up to 67 character (previously a 26 character maximum), with 243 different country suffixes, maybe with a bit of creativity and more celebrity deaths you could be able to make a million dollar investment from registering a domain name from as low of a price as $1AUD.
