Firefox 3.5, the World’s Most Popular BrowserAdd to My Brief

Vince Scordino | 23/12/2009

Can you hear that? It’s the sound of victory! It’s official, Mozilla’s most recent browser “Firefox 3.5” is now the world’s most popular web browser. With IE7 not too far in second place and IE8 catching up fast, Firefox’s global market share is just under 22%.

On almost all browser usage reports, Firefox has been striving toward 20% market share over the past year. Moreover, TheCounter.com has Firefox at 18% last quarter, as does ADTECH for their Q1 2008 report, showing their sheer determination to become number one. Firefox’s fierce competitor, Internet Explorer, still holds over 55% of the global browser market with its share being split between IE6, IE7 and IE8.

It’s great to see IE8 rising at the expense of IE6 and IE7. However on closer observation, we see that IE6 remains the most powerful browser in Africa and Asia, despite its usage figures showing single digits throughout the west.

It will be interesting to see how Google’s Chrome browser continues to fight it out in the battle of the browsers. So far so good as new browser in this competitive market, though we’ll save our applause and let Mozilla savor their moment of glory – what browser are you using today?
