Three mistakes in web projectsAdd to My Brief

| 4/06/2010

For any decision maker considering investing in a new or upgraded website, avoid the following common mistakes.

  1. Overlooking internal project drive: website services is analogous to construction. No company would authorise building to commence on a new factory or order plant and equipment before completing and approving specifications.  This process needs to be driven internally. Yous supplier will provide recommendations but unless you are willing to sign over actual executive project authority, you need an internal driver.
  2. Rushing the design: the design phase is the most exciting phase for most clients. The client can see how the finished product will look. But every alteration to  a design concept has ramifications for later development. Again, using the construction analogy, if you changed the appearance of your factory you would expect that the layout of the equipment within would also require alteration. Recalibrating such issues involves questions of fact and degree, which takes time and cannot be rushed.
  3. Treating Website Services as different to other suppliers: because Website Services is an immature industry, there are very few if any long-tenured executives with experience of the sector.  So we’ll simplify it: Web is just another industry. It has inventory limits and supply constraints.  Do you run your business with unlimited excess capacity for unbudgeted projects? If yes, good luck at your next AGM. If not, then you can begin to realise that Web is not mysterious, it is construction with code, not bricks and mortar.
