Facebook to enter the email market - Is this the end of Gmail?Add to My Brief

Alex Wilson | 15/11/2010

Facebook has launched a new covert operation entitled ‘Project Titan’ whereby they will be tightening the screws on some big revenue potential. Unofficially this has been dubbed internally at Facebook as the ‘Gmail killer’.

The focus of this project is to launch Facebook email services to its 500 million users, allowing them to have a @Facebook.com email address.

The roll out of such a project will have massive implications on the email market.  The subscriber base to Facebook is of epic proportions, giving them access to some of the most active internet users while storing large amounts of data on their user behavior – something very exciting for would be advertisers.

The goal of the project is to create an ecosystem, it would be sensitive to the relationships people have in Facebook already and let people combine text, pictures, video and music in one resource for communication.

This sounds awefully like the Google Wave program that was stopped only a few months ago that was headed by Lars Russmussan – who after having his project scrapped decided to break away from Google and join guess who? Facebook.

Watch this space, I think Facebook are going to have great success with this strategy. The advertising potential, the sheer market domination, the evolving face of email – it all points to a win/win for Facebook in my opinion.
