How Much Code Do You Really Need To Know?Add to My Brief

Benjamin Tinker | 26/08/2009

As the internet continues to expand it has become more of a challenge for a developer to keep up with evolving code structures. In the beginning it was just a bit of HTML then came along Javascript. Before you knew we had all kinds of libraries joining the party ASP, PHP, Cold Fusion, Ruby, VB and so on. It soon became apparent to any up and coming developer that lines would have to be drawn in the sand as to which developer path they would take. At the end of the day it did come down to where you intended to work and what code was established at that organization. Was if freeware or licensed?

In my experience I thought going down the freeware path would have been a good option but soon realized that licensed (let’s not kid ourselves; Microsoft) was the better way to go. Why is that? Well the answer is very simple. It works. It works with itself. It works all the time and you know what works on one system will work on the next one running the same software. Sure, we can all bitch about the evil overlord powers of Microsoft but at the end of the day, as a developer, if it works and there is software to make it easier and the tech library by the company is consistent and thorough then I’ll take them. But that is my choice. At least it’s not Java.
