The influence of ‘Metro Style’ on modern day website design

Finally, Windows has actually ‘designed’ their interface. It's been a long time coming but Microsoft has realised the benefits of putting Design / UX first.

A positive thing, I think, that has come from this design move is the influence it has had on web design. The new ‘Metro Style’ has adopted principles from classic Swiss graphic design, with clear focus on the content of applications and additional impetus on typography. We have seen web design go through patches of trends, however I feel this one is especially exciting as it helps to mobilise 3 online mediums (Desktop, Tablet and Mobile).

As mentioned above this design direction has it's roots planted 60 years ago in Switzerland where the focus was on clean, readable and asymmetric design. Now Microsoft has taken this influence and created the ‘Metro style’. This style is already influencing our website designs at Wiliam as well as many other new sites online. Below are a few example sites that have taken these principles and adapted to the web.
