Umbraco 7 – Better… Faster … Stronger … Sha-na-na-na-na-na-na-na

Guy MacArthur Team : Web Development

A new version of everyone’s favourite open source CMS is out and it’s pretty sweet.

Though many of us still remember the CMS version which must not be named, Umbraco HQ may have just totally redeemed themselves with their newest release, version 7.

The CMS UI has a whole new look and feel, which is both more efficient and intuitive.  For instance, managing your content is now a couple clicks away, literally.  With the new interface, codenamed Belle, action routes for tasks like creating content pages and media have been optimised so you do less searching and yes/no decisions till you reach an editing page.  I know it may sound a bit anal retentive, but how about you come back and talk to me when you do a late night of content populating on a new site.  My carpal tunnel is acting up just thinking about it.

The UI is now powered by AngularJS, Google’s JavaScript framework darling.  It’s fast, lightweight, compatible across all of major desktop and mobile browsers, and obviously well supported, and on and on and on.  It’s pretty sweet, and is great to work with if you want to work on your own plugins and extensions for Umbraco.

Some other new gems released in this version:

  • Cleaner, well laid out and optimized section content editors
  • Media section overhaul for better management and convenience
  • Listviews for support of large child node sets (whole lot of content) and enhanced content search functionality, which is great for larger sites.
  • The older obsolete code finally beginning to be sunsetted (get out already)
  • Fast, really fast, and stable.  Great job guys!

And so much more! Check out a quick run through of Umbraco Version 7 from the guys at Umbraco HQ when you get a second.
