Australian use of social media increases..again!

Nielsen research has found that social media usage has gone from 800,000 hours per month to 1.6 million hours per month since August 2008 to June 2009 - effectively doubling the number of hours consumers spend using online in social media websites.

As of August 2009, Facebook had 8 Million Australian members, that is getting awfully close to 50% of Australias population in my eyes (based on our curent figures of 21 Million) and should be a real eye opener to companies still debating the adoption of social media like Facebook and Twitter.

These growth rates are extraordinary - even Twiter is still climbing, up 979% in August 2009.

Is your company involved in social media marketing? Many seem to not be or are struggling to equate a ROI of social media and their time to that of the business.

In saying all of the above, it is important for companies to not only engage in social media strategically, but to also actively monitor their progress and sentiment in the market place. The information that can be captured out of social media has the power to influence brand managers and other campaign decision makers - these insights could be just what you are looking for.
