Is social media a fad or is it here to stay?

With over 50% of the population being under 30 years of age (for the first time in history) and with a staggering 96% of these under 30’s having joined one social media form or another, I think it’s safe to say it’s here to stay!

The following staggering statistics from Socialnomics show the impact social media is having on the internet;

  •  More people visit Facebook than Google on a daily basis in the USA
  • 1 out of 8 married couple in the United States met over one form of social media or another
  • Radio took 38 years to reach an audience of 1,000,000 people, TV took 13 years to reach an audience of 1,000,000 people, the internet took just 4 years to reach an audience of 1,000,000 people – Facebook reached 2,000,000 people in less than a year!
  • If Facebook where a country in economic terms, it would be the 3rd largest
  • 80% of companies use social media as a form of recruitment
  • 50% of mobile traffic in the UK is used for social media
  • YouTube is the second largest search engine on the internet
  • Every minute over 20 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube
  • Only 14% of people trust advertisements, whilst 78% of users trust peer recommendations
  • There are over 60 millions profiles updates every day on Google

Last and not least, social media has even overtaken porn as the world’s favourite online activity!
