Sony (with the help of IBM) has smashed the previous record for storing data on a cassette tape! What the? Or should I say, Why the? It turns out 185 terabytes (that's 148 Gigabits per square inch and 74 times the capacity of current tapes) is a much better use of space when compared with anything currently in use. Although slower to access, massive data centres for companies like Google and Facebook will be able to archive masses more data in the same floor space in the future.

I knew I shouldn't have thrown that old tape drive out.
