Which country has the fastest Internet speeds? Not Australia!

If you are anything like I am (a secret gamer) and you’ve got a need for speed, then your best bet for fast internet speeds is going to be in South Korea.

It would seem as though the South Koreans are miles ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to Internet speeds. To be specific, South Koreans downloaded at an average of 25.3 Mbps last year. To put that into perspective, the average in Australia is 6.9 Mbps. Ouch.

It's been a long time coming and i've been reading about it for more than 12 months, but that’s all about to change thanks to the increased rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN). And luckily enough for one of my colleagues, his new apartment has NBN rolled out already.

Here are the top 5 counties with the fastest internet speeds.

South Korea

Average speed: 25.3Mbps

Hong Kong

Average speed: 16.3 Mbps

Japan

Average speed: 15.0

Switzerland

Average Speed: 14.5

Sweden

Average speed: 14.1

Where's Australia you might ask? Well we're all the way down at #44 with a 6.9Mbps average.

That said, until recently i've been on Telstra Cable and was at certain times able to achieve speeds of 115Mbps. Not too bad really, though cable is significantly limited in it's availability and has limited upload speeds which are significantly lower than the NBN's.

If the NBN manages to get over the hurdles it seems to be facing, it could very well drastically change the way Australians access the Internet, and just as importantly, the way we design websites in the future.
