Web 2.0 – Serious NewsAdd to My Brief

| 7/03/2007

Truly interesting text-based Web content has to come from an intelligent, human source. Weather satellite feeds and location Web cams not withstanding, text content is still the mainstay of the internet (although video offerings are starting to make a very significant contribution), and inputting it is still a data entry task – even with the best input systems.

If original content is not derived from video production or the scanning of printed text, then at some point, someone has to type the information, or at the very least dictate it to a voice recognition system and then edit it.

The latest content management systems and interface technologies allow Website owners to enlist hundreds – perhaps even hundreds of thousands - of users as ready and willing data entry personnel, each wanting to participate, contribute an opinion, or perhaps even pursue a moment of fame.

With the availability of cheap, powerful digital video equipment, streaming video, and broadband, large numbers of  Web users are becoming become small video production ‘cogs’ in enormous Web 2.0 video sharing machines such as YouTube.

US based news giant USA Today has recently taken Web 2.0 to what could be described as yet another conceptual level. Users of the on-line news service can contribute text and photographic material – and in so doing become defacto mini reporters, cameramen, commentators, and journalists.

Each contributor is not just an on-line interlocutor with other collaborators, but a potential news source for USA Today.
