Naming your images correctly to drive maximum trafficAdd to My Brief

Alex Wilson | 15/09/2010

SEO has many important factors. It is much like religion, we all don’t know the exact truth so we all form opinions and assume.

Something I have always assumed about SEO is that the more your desired keyword is using on a page the better. Excluding spamming the page, your keyword should be included in human friendly, well written text and also in page titles and Meta data.

How can your images drive traffic?

I believe the more references to your keyword in the code of your website the better. This is why I have always named my images with a keyword in them and also tried to be descriptive.

If I am uploading an image of a graph I have created to display automotive advertising statistics, I have two options of naming the image.

  • 1. I could call it ‘graph101.jpg’ OR
  • 2. Automotive-advertising-statistics-2010.jpg

By naming your image following option number 2s convention, you will get traffic from Google image results and also give the Google spiders another chance of seeing industry relevant keywords in all matters pertaining to your website – including images and thus increasing your chances of ranking for those words.
