Education and Web 2.0Add to My Brief

| 7/03/2007

What kinds of content will be seen on the Web in the future? What about free face-to-face education offered to every school age child in every society, on-line?

In a recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald on line, the chief executive of Wikipedia spoke of Wikipedia’s role in ‘the democratisation of knowledge1.’ What role will Web 2.0 play in such a ‘democritisation’?

What if any child could search for a topic and get a live interactive lesson on just that area of interest? Perhaps this is too lofty an ideal? On the other hand, there are some encouraging initiatives in the area of on-line education which may give some substance to such ideas. The existence of Wikipedia demonstrates that free globally available knowledge is something rather more than just a pipe dream.

Moreover, Bill Gates’ predilection for equipping educators and facilitating education availability are well known2.

Meanwhile, there are numerous tertiary institutions offering on-line courses to adults, and there are even some impressive pioneering efforts in commercial education provision for school-age children.

Web 2.0 has been touted for some months now as a most promising catalyst to corporate marketing, education and collaboration, and the Web is saturated with commentary about corporate blogging.

Some commentators are already looking in the direction of Web 2.0 for enhancing and evolving adult and tertiary education, making it more collaborative and less traditional3.

Once the corporate world has wrapped its head around Web 2.0, perhaps the focus might shift to what Web 2.0 could do for children’s education on-line.
