Microsoft Bing & Yahoo Merger Announced

Microsoft and Yahoo are finally joining forces in search to take on Google. In short, what the deal brings to both parties is Microsoft will be powering Yahoo’s search with the Bing engine, and yahoo will become the relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers.

Microsoft, who just months ago, released a new search engine “Bing”, a decisive engine, clearly has its sights on chipping into Google’s rather large market share. As Mr Ballmer says, "Through this agreement with Yahoo, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company”. The combined search market share is currently only half of what Google’s, 30% to 61% respectively, so there is still a long road ahead to take some of that lead from Google.

As with the browser wars, time will only tell how people will respond to new avenues of search. Will Binghoo become as dominant as Google, or will Google continue on as the search engine of choice for the majority.
