Banner Ads That Work (0)Add to My Brief

Here are 5 tips from Wiliam’s design team on how to create banner ads that actually get clicks:

  1. Say it in 10 Words or Less. By their nature, banner ads are highly graphical. Remember the adage ‘Less is More’ and use fewer words and in an easy-to-read large font. Certain words are more powerful, like; free, bargain, secret, and awesome. Don’t overlook the critical step of making sure each one is spelled correctly.

  2. Compose a call to action. In the land of Banner Ads, exclamations like ‘Click Here!’ and ‘Check it out!’ can be extremely effective at drawing traffic. By surfing competitor banner ads that are effective, you’ll quickly discover that action words lend an urgency and clarity to a banner ad that helps provide the momentum that brings clicks.

  3. Keep it simple. A site visitor will take maybe a second or two to glance at a banner ad. The message, product, and point should be instantaneously understandable. Design clutter, distracting art, motion or video that doesn’t immediately load or isn’t directly on point will all lose you customers.

  4. Make the graphics loud and clear. The primary point of your ad should be the strongest element. There is no room for subtlety with banner ads. Be willing to sacrifice the corporate brand logo, if necessary, or to shrink it if it distracts from the chief design elements. Make sure that the graphics don’t bloat the ad size, keep it under 25kb so it will load instantaneously.

  5.  Don’t Put All your Eggs in Just One Basket. Design 2 or 3 banner ads for the same marketing promotions and use them all. Different designs resonate with different audiences. Track which ad is successful, but remember that there is no right answer. Floating a slight variety will boost clicks and conversions by appealing to a broader audience.
