When it comes to the web things are constantly changing so it helps to be looking at statistics and see what the latest trends and stastics are. Below are some that I have gathered from a few of my favourite sites.

1. 26% of people put items in their shopping cart just to check delivery costs.

Promoting free shipping will stop this. 1

2. Thursday is the best day to send emails

Whilst the weekday open rates are close, Mailchimp found Thursday had the highest open rate.  2

3. 67.45% of online shopping carts are abandoned before the customer completes a sale.

This is equivalent to walking into a grocery store and seeing seven filled trolleys just sitting there, abandoned, near the checkout … while only three people walk out with groceries. 3

4. Parting with money is equivalent to stubbing your toe

A recent study shows that the part of your brain that is stimulated by pain — the orbitofrontal cortex — is the same part of your brain that’s stimulated when you have to part with your hard-earned money. 4

5. Don't put dollar signs on prices

A Cornell University study concluded people respond better to prices when they are listed without dollar signs. This was focused on restaurant menus however has seen to have the same effect on web. 5

6. 10am is the best time to send emails

If 10am has the highest open rates you would have to assume they are being opened on a desktop once the customer has had their coffee (or Yorkshire tea) and settles into the working day. 2

7. e-commerce sites averaged around 3% conversion rates

Back in 2010 this was 1%. 6

8. There are 5 types of ecommerce shoppers:

  • Product focused
  • Browsers
  • Researchers
  • Bargain hunters
  • One-time shoppers 7

9. Average email open rate is between 15% and 25% for marketing emails and of 40% for transactional emails.

You should be upselling in transactional emails as the open rate is much higher. 8

10. An email overlay will increase opt-ins by up to 400%

Email overlays are obtrusive but effective 9

11. Mobile users have surpassed desktop users

It has finally happened where there are more users browsing the web on mobile than desktop. 10

12. Landing pages have an average of 70%-90% bounce rate.

This is significantly higher than other bounce rates for e-commerce sites or content sites. 11

13. The rich have iphones and the poor have androids.

This is in the US but it shows tweets from Iphone Vs Android in two economically different areas where Manhattan is a much wealthier area than New Jersey. 12

(the green is Android and the red is iphone)
